Here's a mental exercise that may bemuse you
BY JACK K. OVERMYER
President and Owner, The Sentinel

Below are four questions. You must answer them instantly. You can't take your time; answer each of them immediately.

Alright? Let's find out just how clever you really are.

Ready? Go!!!

First Question: You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person, you take his place; you are second!

Try not to screw up in the next question. To answer the second question, don't take as much time as you took for the first question.

Second Question: If you overtake the last person, then are you the second from the last?

Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the last person?

You're not very good at this are you?

Third Question: Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your head only, do not use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1,000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1,000. Now add 30. Add another 1,000. Now add 20. Now add another 1,000. Now add 10. What is the total?

Did you get 5,000? The correct answer actually is 4,100.

Don't believe it? Check it with your calculator!

Today is definitely not your day. Maybe you will get the last question right.

Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Answer: Nunu?

Of course not. Her name is Mary.

Read the question again.

At a Catholic school, there was a "meet the teacher" open house for the second graders. After the meeting, a nun announced that there would be a small reception afterwards in the cafeteria.

All the children and parents filed in and then saw on a table a plate of apples, a plate of cookies, and some water bottles and juice. As the children went through the line, one boy saw that there was a sign on the plate of apples that said, "Take only one. God is watching."

So, the boy took an apple and moved on to the cookies. He helped himself, and then took a small piece of paper, and wrote: "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."

Little Johnny wasn't very good at spelling. During an oral spelling exam, the teacher wrote the word "new" on the blackboard.

"Now," she asked Johnny, "what word would we have if we placed a 'K' in the front?"

After a moment's reflection, Johnny said, "Canoe."

Not many people know that Edison was an avid fisherman. He usually included some trout fishing in his infrequent vacations.

During one such trip to the west, he was befriended by an Indian tribe. They provided free room and board, also expert fishing guides for his stay.

On his first night he discovered that the only sanitary facility was an old-fashioned outhouse. To make things worse it had no light, even though the village had electricity in the homes.

As a thank-you gift for their kindness, Edison purchased the necessary materials and personally installed lighting in the Indians' privy.

He thus became the first person to wire a head for a reservation.
