Carl Bennett passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, with his loving family by his side, in Fort Wayne.
Carl was 97 years young, born on Dec. 7, 1915, in Rockford.
Carl's career with the Zollner Piston Company included player, coach, manager and athletic director of the basketball and softball teams. During his tenure, the teams won 16 championships. During the 1948-1949 season with the Pistons, the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America met in Fort Wayne to complete the formation of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Mitchell Bennett; sons, Kirk and Gary; daughter, Sandra Dodane; stepdaughter, Catherine Popp Hoffman; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service is at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, with calling one hour prior.
Calling is also 1-6 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, Fort Wayne.
