Kristen Marie 'Kristy' (Barsh) Downing, 35, Kokomo, died at 12:15 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family.

She fought a valiant battle with cancer for three years, remaining cheerful and never complaining.

She was born Jan. 21, 1978, in Kokomo, to Ronald and Pamela (Waymire) Barsh.

On July 12, 2003, she married her high school sweetheart, Patrick Downing, at the First Christian Church in Kokomo, and he survives.

Kristy was a 1996 graduate of Kokomo High School, where she was a cheerleader and played tennis. As a 2000 graduate of Ball State University, cum laude, she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a reading endorsement, and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority.

She earned her master's degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2002. She taught in the Kokomo schools for 12 years, having taught first and fourth grades at Bon Air, Elwood Haynes and, most recently, Lafayette Park. She was a member of KTA and PTO and served as a student council advisor. She also served on the InSAI Steering Team, a liaison between students and faculty. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers' honorary.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and had served on the Diaconate Board as a Super Church Leader and was a member of the Rebekah Circle. Other memberships included the Kokomo Wildkat Boosters, and Cardinal Varsity Club. She enjoyed photography, dancing and shopping as well as time spent on Lake Manitou, boating and swimming.

She was a sports fan who followed the Kokomo Wildkats, Ball State Cardinals, Indianapolis Indians, Pacers and Colts.  Favorite destinations were Florida beaches, Disney World and Chicago. Kristy loved being a wife to Patrick and a mother to Olivia and Owen, and especially treasured time with family and friends.

She will be sorely missed by her husband, Patrick; children, Olivia and Owen; her parents, Ronald and Pamela Barsh, all of Kokomo; her sister, Kimberly Picciola (Manny), of Chicago, Ill.; her mother-in-law, Jerri Roth (Pat), of Idaville; her father-in-law, Michael Downing, of Rochester; sister-in-law, Jennifer Miller (Rick), of Peru; brother-in-law, Adam Ennis, of Carmel; her aunt, Patricia Waymire, of Naples, Fla.; her uncle, Barry Barsh, of Marietta, Ga., and four cousins, Bonnie Balboa, William 'Bill' Barsh, Robin Saldana and Brian Barsh; and nieces and nephews, Sofia and Sam Picciola, of Chicago, Ill., and Ashley, Alice and Averi Miller, of Peru. She was blessed with special extended family members from the Downing, Fruth, Ennis and Roth families.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Dorothy Waymire and Robert and Wilma Barsh.

The family would like to thank all her physicians and nurses for their loving care during this journey.

A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the First Christian Church, Kokomo, with Pastor Will Jewsbury officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church from 3-8 p.m. on Friday, and one hour before the service on Saturday.

Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Kristy to the Olivia and Owen Downing College Fund, in care of Community First Bank, Kokomo, and/or the Kristen Downing Scholarship Fund, Kokomo Public Schools Education Foundation, and/or the First Christian Church, Kokomo.

Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
