He was born on Jan. 2, 1941, in Rochester, the son of Gerald D. and Florence E. (Gruwell) McMillen. A 1959 graduate of Rochester High School, he was class president for two years, a varsity basketball letterman and active in the Future Farmers of America. Mr. McMillen had been an educator at Steger, Ill., Triton Schools in Bourbon, and North Miami Schools, Denver. He retired as school counselor for Rochester Community Schools after 15 years. At the conclusion of his workdays at school, he spent many years working on his family farm. He had been a member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. In his leisure time, he played a mean drum version of "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley, and enjoyed genealogy, golf, fishing, camping, following the Chicago Cubs and Indiana University basketball, and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. McMillen, Rochester; children Colleen Wood, Carmel, Brad McMillen, Rochester, and Sheila and husband Too Keller, Carmel; grandchildren Alyssa Wood, student at Indiana University Bloomington, Grant Wood, student at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Gabbi Pinegar, Carmel, and Luke, Lauren and Karli Keller, all of Carmel; brother Gary McMillen, Evart, Michigan; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved canine companion, Lucy, his goldendoodle.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

His funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rochester, with Father Michael McKinney officiating. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

Pat & Family, we were so sorry to hear of Bills passing. We both had very fond memories of working with him and of course Nels has always proclaimed what a good friend he was. I know this will cause a void in your family but please know we are praying for all of you. Love & Sympathy, Nels and Cindy
