Jeff Gordon readies for the Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jeff Gordon always expected to be at this weekend's Brickyard 400.

The tricky part was figuring out his role.

One week after Gordon asked his publicist to delay a long-planned announcement that he would drive the pace car before a race he won five times, the four-time Cup champion returned to the 2.5-mile oval as Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s replacement and the top attraction in Sunday's race.

LONDON (AP) - Now that Russian track and field athletes have failed in their effort to have their Olympic ban overturned, it's up to the IOC to decide whether to kick the entire Russian team out of the games that begin in Rio de Janeiro in 15 days.

In another blow to the image of the sports superpower, the highest court in sports on Thursday dismissed an appeal by 68 Russian track athletes of the ban imposed by the IAAF following allegations of systematic and state-sponsored doping.

No titles, but plenty of baseball talent
Spring high school athletic All-Sentinel Teams will continue in Monday's edition.

For the second straight season, no Sentinel area baseball team won a sectional title. Only Caston and Culver won a sectional game.

But that doesn't mean the area lacked good players. The abundance of summer travel teams has given kids a chance to play outside of the seven-week IHSAA regular season and increased the overall level of play.

Softball standouts named
Spring high school athletic All-Sentinel Teams will continue in Saturday's and Monday's editions.

The 2016 All-Sentinel softball team does not feature one dominant pitcher as Josie Wood might have been listed the last two years, but we did have a top-flight player in Rochester's Becky Malchow, who proved to be both a tough out and a slick-fielding second baseman.

Olympics unify despite fears
There seems to be a long list of reasons why the Olympics in Rio are doomed.

The water is filthy and laced with bacteria. Police officers in Brazil are underpaid, and there aren't that many of them. The Brazilian economy is a mess, and president Dilma Rousseff is being impeached.
