Rohr, Korkos conquer illness to reach regionals
BOYS TRACK

BREMEN - Both of the Rochester boys track team's top distance runners had to shake off illness to reach the regional from the Bremen sectional last week.

Both Thomas Rohr and Harrison Korkos said they had been dealing with upper respiratory problems - a lot of coughing included - prior to the sectional.

Warsaw knocks out Lady Zs
GIRLS TENNIS

CULVER - The Rochester High School girls tennis team lost to Warsaw High School 5-0 Tuesday night, ending their run in the IHSAA regional tournament at Culver Academy's Gable Tennis Center.

Rochester's doubles teams were the first to fall to the powerful play of Warsaw.

Tyler pushes pace to regional
Rochester's Kelsey Tyler didn't want to take out a fast pace at the sectional on her home track at Barnhart Field May 16.

But nobody went out with her. Eventually, only Manchester's Rae Bedke could match Tyler's early endurance.

Lady Zs rely on no drama, 'Jesse-isms' to win sectional
With the match tied 2-2, the Rochester girls tennis team would not have won the Culver Academy sectional if Zoe Bixler would not have beaten Culver Academy's No. 1 singles player for the third and decisive point Thursday.

Of course, they wouldn't have even played Culver Academy Thursday if No. 2 singles player Allie Bickle had not have beaten Knox's No. 2 singles player in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Winamac boys win 5th straight sectional
Boys track

The Winamac boys track team won its fifth consecutive sectional title at Rensselaer Central High School Thursday. The Warriors scored 103.5 points to top the 14-team field. Boone Grove was runner-up with 63.5 points.

Senior Bill Williamson, an Indiana Tech recruit, accounted for 31 points. He won sectional titles in the high jump (6-4) and pole vault (13-0) and was third in the long jump and fourth in the 110 hurdles. He automatically qualified for the high jump, pole vault and long jump and could also advance to the Valparaiso regional in the 110 hurdles.

Singles sweep leads RHS to back-to-back sectional titles
GIRLS TENNIS

CULVER - May 18 will forever be a special date in Rochester girls tennis history.

Exactly one year after RHS beat Culver Academy to end the Lady Eagles' 11-year run as sectional champions, RHS did it again with a 3-2 win over Culver Academy at the Culver Academy sectional final Thursday.

Harsh, Brown lead RHS past Southwood
SOFTBALL

WABASH - The goal for Rochester softball pitcher Ady Harsh was clear. Throw strikes.

She did that and with help from fellow Maci Brown, the Lady Zs pulled away to beat host Southwood 8-3 Wednesday.

NM's Lefebvre, White win sectional titles
GIRLS TRACK

The North Miami girls track team got a jump on the competition at the Rochester girls track sectional at Barnhart Field Tuesday.

That would be from jumpers Carlee Lefebvre, Faith White and Adi Hartley.

Lefebvre soared 17-1 1/2 to win the long jump, White cleared 5-2 to win the high jump and also qualified for regionals in the long jump, and Hartley also qualified for regionals in the high jump.

Valley's Julian wins TRC medalist
WARSAW - Jeremy Julian remained calm.

The first three holes didn't go the way the Tippecanoe Valley senior wanted them to go at the Three Rivers Conference boys golf tournament at Rozella Ford Golf Club Saturday. But the last 15 were ideal.

RHS clinches TRC title share
GIRLS TENNIS

SOUTH WHITLEY - On match point, Abbie McCarter's backhand drop shot hit the net, hung for semingly a few extra seconds, and finally dropped over.

It might be better to be lucky than good, but it's likely better to be both.

McCarter and her Rochester girls tennis teammates ended a busy, successful week with a 3-2 win over host Whitko Friday to improve to 13-2 overall. More importantly, RHS clinched a share of the Three Rivers Conference title with a 7-1 record.

NM boys coach DeMien steps down
Boys basketball

North Miami boys basketball coach Ryan DeMien has stepped down after one season, The Sentinel learned Tuesday. North Miami went 8-15 last year under DeMien, who transitioned to the North Miami boys after coaching the North Miami girls the previous five seasons. North Miami went 1-8 in conference play in 2016-17. Their 52-44 win at Rochester on Dec. 16, 2016, was their first Three Rivers Conference win in three years. DeMien will stay on the North Miami faculty.

The next North Miami coach will be the sixth since the school board voted not to renew John Burrus' contract in the summer of 2007.

RHS fans 13 times in loss to Whitko
BASEBALL

Drew Bradford struck out 13 men in pitching a five-hitter to lead the Whitko baseball team to an 8-2 win over Rochester at Bob Copeland Field Wednesday.

Bradford had a shutout going for the first six innings before RHS got to him for a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Lefebvre wins 3 TRC track titles
TRACK

MARION -- North Miami senior Carlee Lefebvre signed with Indiana State to continue her academic and track careers last fall, and she showed the Three Rivers Conference why she was a Division I talent Tuesday.

Lefebvre won the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the long jump at the TRC meet at Indiana Wesleyan University.

You've got to know when to Holden Senior hits 2 HRs, pitches N. Miami to win over RHS
BASEBALL

Shane was a pain for the Rochester baseball team Monday.

That would be North Miami senior Shane Holden, who had three hits, homered twice, had four RBIs, scored four runs and also struck out six in route-going performance on the mound as the visiting Warriors topped the Zebras 13-5 at Bob Copeland Field Monday.

FULTON - The 14th and final inning of the day was all worthwhile for Galen Rentschler and the Caston baseball team in a home Hoosier North doubleheader against Knox.

Knox won 4-3 in Game 1, but Caston won 7-4 in Game 2.

Kinser has 2 RBIs, but Comets fall to Triton
Baseball

Triton 11, Caston 4 (Tuesday): Brandon Kinser singled, doubled and had two RBIs, and Bryce Hamilton also had two hits for the visiting Comets in a Hoosier North road loss to Triton Tuesday.

Hamilton took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in three innings. Brett Milburn allowed four earned runs in three innings of relief.

IHSAA moves up opening day in 6 fall sports events
The IHSAA voted to move up the first official contest day of six fall sports by two days. That will give teams in boys tennis, girls and boys cross-country, girls and boys soccer and volleyball "an extra Saturday to schedule potential contests if they choose."

RHS takes 7th at Warsaw Invite
Boys golf

The RHS boys golf team shot a 347 and finished in seventh place out of nine teams at the Warsaw Invitational at Rozella Ford Golf Course Tuesday.

Killian Bailey led RHS with a 78, Jackson Sawyer had an 87, Kalvary Lingenfelter had an 87, Zach Graham had a 95, and Wes Scobie had a 100.

Tucker sprints Valley girls to win; Rohr, Perez help RHS take 3-way meet over Vikings, Triton

AKRON - Sarah Tucker won the 100 and 200 meter races to lead the Tippecanoe Valley girls track team to a three-way home win over Rochester and Triton Tuesday.

Valley had 61 points, RHS had 59, and Triton had 46.

Bailey wins RHS Invite
Killian Bailey became the first Rochester golfer to win medalist honors at the Rochester Invitational Saturday since Brad Fellers in 1993.

It figures that Fellers will find out very soon about Bailey's feat. That's because Fellers is Bailey's swing coach.

RHS goes 0-3 at LaPorte tourney
The Rochester softball team went 0-3 at the LaPorte Classic Hookem-Zookem Varsity Softball Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They are 7-10 on the season. RHS lost to South Bend Adams 8-5 Friday, lost to LaPorte 9-3 Saturday and lost to Lowell 11-0 in five innings Saturday.

Caston scores 7 in 1st inning, beats Northfield
Baseball

Caston 8, Northfield 4 (Thursday): Efrain Amezquita and Maddux Zeider each had a hit and two RBIs, and Zach Conrad and Zeider combined on a six-hitter for the host Comets in a win over Northfield Thursday.

Caston scored seven times in the first inning, knocking out Northfield starter Matt Coe. Myles McDonald added two hits.

Sprinters set 'Thonn' for RHS boys
TRACK

WABASH - The perception of the Rochester boys track program might be that it relies on the distance runners for points and whatever the sprinters give them is a bonus.

That didn't happen in a road meet against Three Rivers Conference rival Southwood. With many top distance runners sitting out to rest their legs for the Lime City Relays at Huntington North on Saturday, it was the sprinters who guided RHS to a 78-37 win.

Brooks, Hooks help RHS beat Wabash
BASEBALL

WABASH - Better defense yielded better results for the Rochester baseball team.

Bryce Lahman drove in a run and scored a run as part of a three-run second inning, and Aaron Brooks and Bryce Abbott each added an RBI as the visiting Zebras beat Wabash 5-3 at Chris Rood Field Wednesday to end a two-game skid. Zaine Young and Brooks had two hits each.

Logansport blanks error-prone Zebras
BASEBALL

LOGANSPORT - Max Weatherwax and Brantlen Collins combined on a three-hit shutout as the Logansport baseball team blanked visiting Rochester 7-0 at Jim Turner Field Tuesday.

Austin Foster, Zaine Young and Carter Hooks each had singles for the Zebras, who fell to 5-10. Aaron Brooks reached twice on walks, and Bryce Abbott and Alan Pfeiffer each had walks.

Manchester scores 15, routs Lady Zs
SOFTBALL

NORTH MANCHESTER - The Rochester softball team have laid a lot of 10-run rule beatings on their opponents over the last eight years as the program put out a seemingly endless stream of Division I players.

The Lady Zs were on the other end of that beating Monday.

Manchester scored three runs in the first inning, eight more in the second and four more in the third as they cruised past RHS 15-2 in five innings Monday.

Abbott's 3 RBIs help RHS rout Washington
Freshman Bryce Abbott had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run single that highlighted a four-run third inning, and Brady Perez added two hits and two RBIs as the host Rochester baseball team defeated South Bend Washington 12-2 in six innings at Bob Copeland Field Saturday.

Harsh reality: RHS frosh earns win vs. Lewis Cass
SOFTBALL

Lewis Cass' 7-6 win over Rochester in last year's Class 2A, Sectional 38 softball sectional quarterfinals was a harsh ending to the Lady Zs' season.

RHS threw some Harsh reality right back at the Lady Kings in their first meeting since Friday.

That would be freshman pitcher Ady Harsh, who fired a complete-game five-hitter and allowed no earned runs as RHS edged Lewis Cass 2-1.
