Winamac's DeGroot, Argos' Stone named honorable mention All-State
Boys basketball

Winamac senior point guard Jack DeGroot and Argos senior point guard Vinny Stone were selected to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway senior honorable mention all-state team.

DeGroot averaged 16 points, four rebounds and four assists per game for the Warriors, who went 15-8. Stone averaged 17 points per game for the Dragons.

Beall breaks 5 minutes in 500 free; McCarter breaks 1 minute in 100 back
Swimming

Rochester Royals swimmer Mason Beall finished in eighth place in the 1,000 freestyle, in 10th place in the 200 freestyle, in 10th place in the 1,650 freestyle, in 12th place in the 500 freestyle, in 25th place in the 100 freestyle and in 33rd place in the 200 breaststroke at the Indiana Age Group State meet at the Indiana University Natatorium, Indianapolis, from March 10-12. Beall became the youngest Royals swimmer to break the five-minute mark in the 500 freestyle and set Royals records in the 100, 200 and 1,650 freestyles as well.

Alber, Baker win throws, but NorthWood track sweeps Valley
Track

NorthWood 75, Tippecanoe Valley 39 (girls)

NorthWood 93, Tippecanoe Valley 30 (boys)

Cora Alber won the discus and shot put while Caleigh Byrer won the 100 hurdles and Olivia Smith took the high jump for Valley in a loss to visiting NorthWood Tuesday. Valley also won the 4 x 100 relay in 56.97 seconds.

In the boys meet, Jameson Baker won the discus and shot put, and Keith Wright won the high jump for Valley in the loss.

RHS intends to hire Malchow
BOYS BASKETBALL

Rob Malchow, the coach who led the Rochester boys basketball team to its only state finals appearance in the last 80 years, is apparently headed back to the Zebra bench.

RHS athletic director Greg Martz indicated in a press release Monday that the school intends to hire Malchow, pending the Rochester School Board's approval. The board's next meeting is in April.

Boilermakers bound for Sweet 16
MILWAUKEE (AP) - When Purdue needed him the most, when the Boilermakers were on the brink of a heartbreaking loss, Caleb "Biggie" Swanigan lived up to his nickname - over and over again.

Swanigan had 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, and Purdue reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in seven years with a wild 80-76 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night.

NCAA Tournament: Best to come
COLLEGE BASKETBALL

(AP) - This year's NCAA Tournament has a chance to be just as good as 2016, when Kris Jenkins capped March Madness the most dramatic way possible with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to win Villanova a title.

North Carolina fans may not have liked it, but it was the perfect end to a wild tournament filled with upsets and great games. Plus, the Tar Heels are a No. 1 seed again opposite Villanova on the other side of the 68-team field, setting up the chance for a championship game rematch on April 3.

Notre Dame goes in confident after recent tournament success
College Basketball

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame basketball is doing something its football team hasn't been able to do in recent years: thrive in big games.

The Fighting Irish (25-9), who this past weekend advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game for the second time in three years, head into the NCAA Tournament as the only team to make it to the Elite Eight each of the past two seasons.

Former Penn State administrators plead guilty
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Two former Penn State administrators admitted Monday to mishandling child-sex allegations against Jerry Sandusky, pleading guilty more than five years after the scandal rocked the university and led to the downfall of football coach Joe Paterno.

Tim Curley, a 62-year-old former athletic director, and Gary Schultz, 67, a one-time vice president, could get up to five years in prison for misdemeanor child endangerment. No sentencing date was set.

Zebra boys, Long win conference bowling titles
Bowling

Rochester season update: The Rochester boys bowling team won the Wabacanoe Conference title, beating Peru 454-389 in the stepladder finals championship match on Jan. 21. In singles competition, Garrett Eytcheson was the highest finishing Zebra, placing third. Teammate Joey Rock was sixth. Peru's Marco Baez defeated Valley's Jacob Hoffman 204-180 to win the title.

In the girls team finals, Logansport won the title with a 353-330 win over RHS in the stepladder finals.

Valley's Secrest, Winamac's Kopka, DeGroot, Argos' Dunlap named academic all-state
Basketball

Tippecanoe Valley's Anne Secrest, Winamac's Cammie Kopka and Argos' Courtney Dunlap were three of 39 players selected statewide to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association girls academic all-state first team. In addition, Valley's Meredith Brouyette was selected honorable mention academic all-state. She was one of 161 girls statewide to earn this honor.

Meanwhile, Winamac's Jack DeGroot was one of 40 players statewide selected to the boys academic all-state first team. He was the only area boys player recognized.

Makenna Beall, Mason Beall, McCarter set Royals records at N.E. Divisionals
Swimming

Royals compete at Divisionals: The Rochester Royals swim club earned 23 podium finishes, 12 consolation finalists and 80 lifetime best swims at the Northeast Indiana Divisional meet in Fort Wayne last weekend. Makenna Beall's new record in the 200 freestyle broke an age-group record held by Lana Davis that was over 35 years old.

IUPUI's Good named player of week
College softball

IUPUI senior first baseman Maggie Good was named Summit League Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 27. Good went 6-for-13 in five games last week with two home runs, a double and seven RBIs. That included a grand slam in a 9-1 win over Nebraska in six innings Friday. She also walked once and was hit by a pitch for a .533 on-base percentage. Defensively, she committed no errors in 35 chances.

Brouyette commits to Indiana Wesleyan
Girls basketball

Tippecanoe Valley senior Meredith Brouyette has verbally committed to play basketball at Indiana Wesleyan University beginning in 2017-18. Brouyette, a first-team all-Three Rivers Conference pick, joins teammates Anne Secrest (Youngstown State) and Hannah Dunn (Anderson) among Valley players who will play college basketball.

Zebras try 1-3-1 zone, can't slow down Manchester in sectional loss

CONVERSE - The magic number for the Rochester boys basketball team was 50 during their Class 2A, Sectional 37 semifinal game against Manchester at Oak Hill High School.

In other words, no more than 50 possessions. The fewer the possessions, the better for RHS.

Manchester solves RHS zone, advances to sectional final
BOYS BASKETBALL

CONVERSE - The Manchester boys basketball team hit two big 3-pointers in the second quarter against Rochester in their Class 2A, Sectional 37 semifinal at Oak Hill High School Friday.

It was a total Fluke.

Specifically, that would be junior guard Koehl Fluke, whose treys sparked a 15-0 run that covered the second and third quarters and led Manchester to a 59-36 win over the Zebras.

RHS seeks to reverse trend vs. Squires
Class 2A, Sectional 37 semifinal at Oak Hill

Rochester (5-16) vs. Manchester (7-16), 6 p.m.: If Manchester's heart-stopping 57-56 win over Lewis Cass in the quarterfinals on Tuesday wasn't the highlight of the Squires' season, then maybe its 86-37 win over RHS on Jan. 20 was.

The Squires humbled a Zebra team coming off back-to-back wins over Tippecanoe Valley and Caston. They jumped out to a 27-9 lead after one quarter and went on a 21-0 run in the first half in building a 54-23 halftime lead. They blew by the Zebras off the dribble, scored before the RHS defense could get set up in transition and buried nine 3-pointers on top of that.

Knox shocks Winamac with 21-0 run
BOYS BASKETBALL

WINAMAC - The close-knit Winamac boys basketball team saw everything they had done in building an 11-point fourth quarter lead through the first 28 minutes collapse in a painful loss - literally - to Knox in a Class 2A, Sectional 34 quarterfinal at Winamac Wednesday.

Trailing 60-49 with just under four minutes left, Knox shocked the Warriors with a game-closing 21-0 run to record a 70-60 win.

Wawasee survives highway to Heck, beats Valley in OT nailbiter
BOYS BASKETBALL

SYRACUSE - The Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team gave Wawasee Heck, man.

But it was Wawasee who gave Valley a season-ending loss.

Trevon Coleman scored 14 points, and Tyler Smith hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:47 left in overtime to give the Warriors a 41-37 win over Valley in a Class 3A, Sectional 21 quarterfinal at Wawasee's Hardwood Teepee Tuesday.

Valley seeks win vs. Wawasee
Class 3A, Sectional 21 quarterfinal at Wawasee

Tippecanoe Valley (10-13) vs. Wawasee (5-17), 6 p.m.: Valley has won eight of the last nine meetings against the Warriors, including sectional meetings in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Valley also defeated Wawasee 53-42 four days ago on Valley's senior night. Valley coach Bill Patrick said his team will have to play better tonight than they did on Friday if they want to advance.

Valley played some 1-3-1 halfcourt trap in the fourth quarter on Friday, and Wawasee scored seven points in that quarter.

Craig scores 32, helps Valley past Wawasee in sectional preview
BOYS BASKETBALL

AKRON - Alec Craig scored of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team to a 53-42 win over Wawasee Friday.

Trevon Coleman scored 18 points for Wawasee in the loss.

Briggs' FT with 2.7 seconds left lifts N. Miami past Caston
BOYS BASKETBALL

DENVER - Tristan Working scored 22 points, Trevor Linn added 14, and Zane Briggs hit the game-winning free throw with 2.7 seconds left to give the North Miami boys basketball team a 55-54 win over visiting Caston Thursday.

Briggs' free throw gave North Miami the only lead it would have the entire game.

Press helped RHS seniors have good Knight
BOYS BASKETBALL

Chris Beezhold was threatening to ruin the Rochester boys basketball team's senior night single-handedly.

Beezhold, a 6-6 junior center for Covenant Christian (DeMotte), had 26 points and 10 rebounds, scoring on a variety of post-ups, midrange jumpers and nifty one-handed runners.

Zebras hold off Covenant Christian in regular season finale
BOYS BASKETBALL

Brady Perez came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, including five points in the final two minutes that helped preserve the lead, to push the Rochester boys basketball team to a 54-47 home win over Covenant Christian (DeMotte) on senior night at the RHS gym Tuesday.

Ben Perez had 13 points, and Jordan Reinholt added 12, including a big 3-pointer with just over three minutes left, as the Zebras recovered after letting a 10-0 lead slip at the start.

Valley's Brower makes state in 50 free
BOYS SWIMMING

While schools like Warsaw and Culver Academy dominated the Warsaw boys swimming sectional Saturday, the fastest man in the pool was from Tippecanoe Valley.

That would be Chase Brower, a junior who is believed to be the first Valley state qualifier in decades when he won the 50 freestyle in 22.42 seconds. He held off Warsaw's Alexander Cook, who was timed in 22.66 seconds.

RHS' Clark, Winamac's Armstrong lose at state
WRESTLING

Rochester's Dan Clark lost in his first-round match at the IHSAA state wrestling finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Friday.

Clark, a senior heavyweight, fell to North Central's (Indianapolis) Elijah Bailey 6-1.

'Desire' helps Clark make state
Wrestling hasn't always been as good to Dan Clark as Dan Clark has been good to wrestling.

But his love of wrestling will get rewarded tonight. The Rochester senior will wrestle North Central's (Indianapolis) Elijah Bailey at 285 pounds in the first round of the IHSAA state finals at 6 p.m. tonight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

"It's been the goal all year, so accomplishing it feels great," Clark said.
