Sunday's Olympics roundup: Brazil bids farewell to Olympics; Brazil wins's men's volleyball gold; Denmark wins men's team handball gold; plus, wrestling, cycling, boxing, rhythmic gymnastics
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Brazil and the world bid farewell Sunday to the first Olympic Games in South America, a 16-day spectacle that combined numerous highlight reel moments with ugly and even bizarre episodes that sometimes overshadowed the competitions.

Thousands of fans braved strong winds and sporadic rains to watch the closing ceremony in iconic Maracana Stadium, a finale meant to be both one last bash and to take care of some business - namely signal the transition to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan.

Hear him Rohr: Ex-Squire wins Warsaw Invite in RHS debut
CROSS-COUNTRY

WARSAW - A Zebra caught up with Zeb Tuesday and made a stunning first impression for the Rochester boys cross-country team at the Warsaw Cross-Country Classic Tuesday.

Thomas Rohr noticed that Warsaw's Zeb Hernandez was beginning to falter in the final mile and passed him to win the title in a personal-best 16:11. Hernandez, a state qualifier last year as a freshman, was second in 16:35.

Mac spoils Valley home opener
BOYS SOCCER

AKRON - What somebody might have dreamed one day actually happened.

Tippecanoe Valley has a boys soccer program and a new, well-groomed field on which to play.

But a nightmare ending got in the way of the dream Monday.

Lady Zs wins N. Miami tourney, beginning to see big potential
VOLLEYBALL

DENVER - From handling some serves that move every which way to avoiding an imposing block to being able to dig high-rising hitters like Hannah Towne and Grace Pfeiffer, beating the Rochester volleyball team would appear to be difficult.

The Lady Zs, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A, showed just how tough at the Tomahawk Invitational at North Miami Saturday, winning the tournament for the second straight year. RHS beat South Adams 25-12, 25-21 and Lakeland 25-4, 25-6 in pool play before beating North Miami 25-16, 25-14 and Wabash 25-12, 25-19 in the place round.

Saturday's Olympics roundup: Centrowitz shocks in 1,500, US sweeps 4 x 400 relays, US women win basketball gold, volleyball bronze, Jorgensen wins triathlon; plus, David Boudia, men's soccer, women's golf, women's team handball, men's water polo, wrestling, taekwondo, boxing, modern pentathlon, women's mountain biking, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, canoe/kayak
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Matthew Centrowitz always wanted to be an Olympic runner. Kind of like Matt Centrowitz.

Like father, like son - as the tattoo across his chest says. Only the son, who goes by Matthew, is bringing home a gold medal and neither he nor his dad, known as Matt, can believe it.

During his victory lap after a surprise win in the 1,500 meters at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Saturday, the American runner suddenly spotted his dad in the stands.

"I was like, 'Are you kidding me?" Centrowitz recounted. "It hasn't sunk in. We're both just absolutely astonished right now."

Friday's Olympics roundup: Felix wins 5th career gold in relay; plus, women's pole vault, men's hammer throw, women's 5,000, men's 50K walk, men's volleyball, wrestling, boxing, taekwondo, women's soccer, badminton, women's field hockey, synchronized swimming, equestrian, BMX cycling, beach volleyball
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - In the shadow of mighty Usain Bolt, Allyson Felix achieved something unprecedented in women's track and field Friday by winning her fifth Olympic gold medal.

And together with the rest of the 4x100 meter relay team, she brought the United States closer to its biggest medal haul in decades. The tally could have been higher, too, had the U.S. men's 4x100 team not been disqualified after placing third in the subsequent final.

The women's team was smooth, despite the rocky path to the final. Running the second leg in the relay, Felix kept the U.S. up there with the mighty Jamaicans, before English Gardner and Tori Bowie brought the baton, tightly clenched in their hands, home for gold.

Felix had been bumped in the preliminary heats and lost the baton, but the U.S. team protested and got a second chance - a solo re-run that allowed them to qualify on times.

The drawback was they were given the worst lane of all, Lane 1, which has the tightest corners and usually impedes top speed.

It didn't bother them. The U.S. women brought it home in 41.02 seconds, and lead-off runner Tianna Bartoletta was already waiting for Bowie for a wild embrace and celebrate the second-fastest time in history behind the world record that Felix and Co. set in winning gold at the London Games. For Bartoletta, it was the second gold in Rio, after winning the long jump too.

Dishon, doubles win in straight sets, lead Zebra boys tennis past Triton
BOYS TENNIS

The Rochester boys tennis team did not have its No. 1 singles player for its season opener against visiting Triton at the RHS courts Thursday.

It didn't matter.

RHS got wins from Zac Dishon at No. 2 singles, from Ean Pugh and Austin Utter at No. 1 doubles and from Chase Brown and Carlton Mullet at No. 2 doubles in notching a 3-2 win over the Trojans.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - American Brianna Rollins started out fast and never looked back.

Rollins lead the U.S. sweep of the 100-meter hurdles at the Rio Games on Wednesday night, winning with 12.48 seconds.

Though Rollins was unreachable, it came down to hundredths of seconds for the other two medals.

Nia Ali had silver with 12.59 and Kristi Castlin had 12.61 for bronze.

Grant's advice to Zebras: Less thinking, just play ball
John Glenn

at Rochester

7 p.m.

Players on the Rochester football team have absorbed a new playbook and new offensive and defensive schemes since coach Joe Grant was hired three months ago.

After last Friday's scrimmage, Grant's message for his team was simple: less thinking, more playing. In other words, if they have to think where they have to be all the time, it might prevent them from executing.

Tuesday's Olympic roundup: Simpson wins historic first medal in 1,500; McLeod takes 110 hurdles; plus open water swimming, synchronized swimming, cycling, boxing, sailing, canoe/kayak, US women's volleyball
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - As Jenny Simpson took an extra lap around the blue track Tuesday night, Stars and Stripes in tow, and celebrated becoming the first U.S. woman to medal in the Olympic 1,500 meters, she thought back to a moment of disappointment.

At the 2015 world championships in Beijing, Simpson lost a shoe after getting stepped on and was forced to complete her event with her left foot bare. She ended up 11th, a far cry from her 2011 world title and 2013 runner-up finish.

Now she has her Olympic bronze, finishing third at Olympic Stadium in 4 minutes, 10.53 seconds, behind Faith Kipyegon of Kenya and world-record holder Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia.

Monday's Olympics roundup: Miller dives across finish line, beats Felix in 400; Braz da Silva breaks Olympic pole vault record, wins gold; plus, open water swimming, equestrian, weightlifting, boxing, sailing
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - For beating Allyson Felix, Shaunae Miller gets a gold medal. Maybe they should give her a cape, too.

It took a head-first dive, Superwoman-style, for Miller to spring an Olympic upset Monday over America's top female sprinter in the 400 meters and deny her a record fifth gold medal.

Miller, a 22-year-old from the Bahamas, took an early lead, then held off Felix's charge along the straightaway. Neck-and-neck with two steps to go, Miller sprawled and tumbled across the line to win by .07 seconds.

Sunday Olympics roundup: Despite intruder, Sumgong wins women's marathon; plus, diving, tennis, wrestling cycling, sailing, weightlifting, fencing, shooting, boxing, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's volleyball, men's water polo
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The intruder leaped over the barriers, darted onto the Olympic marathon course and was caught by security.

It was a scary but familiar moment for Kenyan runner Jemima Jelagat Sumgong. Only four months ago, a man also ran onto the course as Sumgong competed in the London Marathon.

Reassuringly for the 31-year-old athlete, Sunday's outcome in Rio de Janeiro was the same as in April in London: The intruder was stopped and Sumgong got the victory.

She became the first Kenyan woman to win the Olympic marathon, completing the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 4 seconds in hot and sunny weather.

Kenyan-born Eunice Kirwa, who now runs for Bahrain, was nine seconds behind, and world champion Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia took bronze.

Saturday's Olympics roundup: Phelps wins 23rd gold as part of medley relay; Manuel adds 50 free silver, medley relay gold to collection; Henderson, US women's rowing eight claim gold
SWIMMING

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Standing atop the medal podium for the 23rd time, Michael Phelps teared up, bit his lip and gave a little nod.

This was how he really wanted to go out.

On top of his game in the water.

Totally content away from the pool.

"It turned out pretty cool," Phelps said, another gold medal around his neck. "It's just a perfect way to finish."

Phelps put the United States ahead to stay on the butterfly leg of the 4x100-meter medley relay, giving the most decorated athlete in Olympic history his 23rd career gold medal Saturday night.

If that was the end, and Phelps insists it is, the numbers are simply astonishing.

No other Olympian has more than nine gold medals.

With 28 medals in all, he's 10 clear of anyone else.

Sunday, August 14, 2016
Olympics roundup: Ervin, 35, wins 50 free gold; Carter wins shot put gold; plus, US women's basketball, men's water polo, tennis, shooting, archery, trampoline, cycling, fencing, equestrian, judo, weightlifting, rowing
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Anthony Ervin finally has an Olympic gold medal to replace the one he sold 16 years ago.

The 35-year-old American won the men's 50-meter freestyle at the Rio Games on Friday, capping a night of upsets in the pool.

Ervin improbably touched first in 21.40 seconds - a hundredth of a second ahead of defending champion Florent Manaudou of France. Teammate and former training partner Nathan Adrian claimed bronze.

Olympics roundup: Ledecky anchors US 4 x 200 free relay to gold
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Katie Ledecky was the fastest swimmer in the pool, and she brought her American teammates along for the ride.

The 19-year-old turned in another overpowering performance to carry the United States to victory in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, capturing her third gold and fourth medal overall at the Rio Olympics.

The U.S. trailed through the first three legs of the race, as Sweden, China and then Australia swapped the top spot.

Then, it was Ledecky's turn on the anchor leg.

She blew everyone away.

Michelle Vittese and Caitlin van Sickle scored for the Americans, who defeated No. 2 Argentina 2-1 in their Olympic opener on Saturday.

Hall of Fame game canceled
NFL

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - An emotional and invigorating Hall of Fame weekend came to a grinding halt Sunday night when the Packers-Colts game was canceled because of poor field conditions.

One day after Brett Favre led the eight-member class of 2016 into the hall, its president, David Baker announced the cancellation after discussing problems with the turf with both teams. He said it was a safety issue and that all fans would be fully refunded for ticket purchases, which will cost the hall several million dollars.
