Zebra-Viking showdown is Friday
Rochester

0-6, 0-4 TRC

at Tippecanoe Valley

1-5, 1-3 TRC

7 p.m.

It's one thing to be winless. It's another not to give effort.

It's the latter that bothered RHS first-year coach Joe Grant in last week's 70-6 loss to Northfield.

"I thought there was a point in time in the third quarter where we just weren't playing very hard," Grant said. "That was probably the most disappointing thing, just seeing a lack of effort there for a time period in the third quarter. We were feeling sorry for ourselves and just weren't playing football."

Press box is legacy to Bibler
To find a monument to Scott Bibler's football legacy at Tippecanoe Valley High School, one needs only to look to the east.

Adorned with old pictures and signs, Valley's new press box celebrates the life and coaching career of the school's all-time winningest football coach, who was killed in a plane crash on Oct. 2, 2015, on his way to a Notre Dame football game.

The game between Rochester and Valley at 7 p.m. Friday is the first Bell game between the schools since the plane crash, which happened on the evening of last year's Bell game and which also claimed the lives of former Valley coach Charlie Smith, his son Scott and race car driver Tony Elliott.

RHS handles serves, sweeps Southwood
VOLLEYBALL

How does one beat the Rochester volleyball team?

Nobody knows yet. They're undefeated.

One way that might not work is just lobbing serves over the net for back row players like Allie Bickle, Kori Rouch and Hannah Towne to eat up.

Southwood might be the Class 2A, No. 5 Lady Zs fiercest rival in the Three Rivers Conference, but the Lady Knights mustered only one ace Thursday, and RHS cruised to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 win at home.

Gang-tackling RHS aiming for Peru's Rader
Peru

1-1, 0-0 Three Rivers Conference

at Rochester

0-2, 0-0

7 p.m.

Reflecting on his team's defensive performance in a 59-6 loss to Plymouth last week, Rochester football coach Joe Grant wasn't so much bothered by poor tackling as he was by a lack of gang tackling. Ideally on defense, all 11 players are there to put the opposing ball carrier down.

"We had a chance to make more tackles," Grant said. "I don't like the fact that we had a lot of solo tackles missed. We want guys to gang-tackle and have 11 hats on the ball. So I think it was more of our pursuit and guys not gang-tackling rather than just missing open-field tackles. ... If everybody pursued and ran to the football, we wouldn't have to make as many solo tackles."
