'Crucial' errors lead to RHS loss
SOFTBALL

FLORA - The Rochester softball team came into their Class 2A, Sectional 38 quarterfinal against Lewis Cass riding an 11-game winning streak.

They had won seven of those 11 games by the 10-run rule, including their final three games before sectional against Plymouth, Tippecanoe Valley and Southwood.

Plymouth ends historic Lady Zs run
GIRLS TENNIS

CULVER - The Rochester girls tennis team's historic state tournament run will not include a regional title.

Plymouth stroked their way past the Lady Zs 5-0 to earn their spot in the Culver Academy regional final. They pressured the Lady Zs with forceful groundstrokes and precisely angled volleys while avoiding unforced errors.

North Miami's White, Lefebvre 'long' to reach track state finals
GIRLS TRACK

North Miami sophomore Faith White is on the cusp of doing something her brother did last year.

Go to the state finals in track.

Meanwhile, Carlee Lefebvre, who is already a state champion in softball, will look to make state in a second sport when she and White participate in the regional at Kokomo High School. Start time is 6 p.m. today.

Holland homers on senior day, but Bremen sweeps Zebras
Rochester senior Alec Holland had a memorable senior moment, but the rest of his baseball teammates might like to forget their doubleheader against Bremen at Bob Copeland Field Saturday.

Bremen won the first game 20-4 in five innings, and they won the second game 15-2 in six innings.

Lady Comets struggle with 'quick hands' in loss to Triton

BOURBON - The Caston softball team has lost its confidence at the plate, according to coach Alysha Marrs.

CULVER -- The moment didn't escape Rochester junior tennis player Rosalie Navarro.

You've got to have Faith: NM's White wins sectional long jump title

Faith White, a North Miami sophomore who comes from a jumping family, was the only Sentinel-area athlete to win a sectional title at the Rochester sectional Tuesday.

'Buss' driver: Valley beats Zebras on walk-off hit
BASEBALL

AKRON - The Rochester baseball team nearly turned the Three Rivers Conference on its head Monday night as they battled Tippecanoe Valley.

In the top of the eighth, Valley relief pitcher Alec Craig and company shut down the Zebras opening the remaining half of the inning wide open to an offensive flurry which ended with a Gavin Bussard walk-off single to give the Vikings the 6-5 victory.

IHSAA, not rain, is huge problem
Rochester track coach Scott Stalbaum gathered his athletes at their makeshift camp at Indiana Wesleyan University just before 11 p.m. Tuesday after the Three Rivers Conference track meet and became a very popular man.

He told the kids they wouldn't have to show up to school until 10 a.m. the following morning.

RHS draws Lewis Cass
SOFTBALL

The Rochester-Lewis Cass regular season softball game did not happen, but the IHSAA draw Thursday made sure that it would.

That's because the Lady Zs drew Lewis Cass in the quarterfinals of Class 2A, Sectional 38 at Carroll (Flora).

MARION - In a Three Rivers Conference track meet full of rain, Rochester's Eli Pugh, Tippecanoe Valley's Neil Clampitt and North Miami's Carlee Lefebvre were among those who reigned on Tuesday.

Musselman's 2-run single gives Lady Zs win over North Miami
SOFTBALL

DENVER - The weather was horrendous.

But Lexy Holland said it gave her rise ball a little extra rise.

And that was among the slightest of differences that allowed the Rochester softball team to beat North Miami 4-3 in a showdown of the two teams that have dominated the Three Rivers Conference since 2010.

The season is going non-stop for the Rochester girls tennis team.

It's not slowing down for prom or the SAT. The only thing it does stop for is rain, which caused perhaps the most compelling of RHS' matches against Bremen to end without a winner.

Valley wins; Argos' Fishburn hurt
BASEBALL

AKRON - The Argos baseball team ranks low on experience, and they might have to worry if they got a little lower in experience during their game against Tippecanoe Valley Friday.

The Vikings rolled to a 19-1 win in five innings, but what might have hurt even more - literally - was when Valley's Luke Helton lined a ball of Argos junior pitcher Kyle Fishburn's bare left hand in the bottom of the third inning.

Sweany homers in RHS win over Peru
SOFTBALL

PERU - When the Rochester softball team wins a Three Rivers Conference game, it usually doesn't take long.

Lexy Holland pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and retired the last 11 batters of the game, and Jossie Sweany hit a two-run home run to lift the Class 2A, No. 12 Lady Zs to a 12-0 win over Peru in five innings at West City Park Wednesday.

O'Connell's 15.6 in 100 hurdles helps Valley triumph in 3-way meet
TRACK

BOURBON - The Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley track teams took different tacks to Tuesday's three-way meet at Triton.

Valley's top sprinters and hurdlers competed, including seniors like Lexi O'Connell, Neil Clampitt.

Meanwhile, Rochester held back distance runners like Wesley Meyer, Eli Pugh and Kelsey Tyler.

Valley won the girls meet with 57 points. RHS had 51, and Triton had 44.

Holland's 4 RBIs help RHS stop Mac
SOFTBALL

Rochester softball player Alexa Holland has played with Becky Malchow since both were little kids.

But Holland was so impressed with a baserunning maneuver of Malchow's against Maconaquah at Fansler Field Monday that she poured a cup of water on her.

Holland might have been worthy of some plaudits as well.

Zebras' Meyer, Tyler take 
top 6 at Zionsville Invitational
Track

Rochester's Wesley Meyer and Kelsey Tyler competed at the Zionsville Invitational Friday.

Meyer, a senior, finished sixth in a field of 24 in the 800 meters in 2:00.16. Zionsville's Oliver Rigg won the race in 1:54.94.

Meyer also finished fourth out of 28 runners in the 1,600 in 4:23.22. Pendleton Heights' Parker Jones won in 4:18.27.

Wabash blanks slumping RHS
BASEBALL

Rochester baseball coach Cory Good could tell that Wabash had a more experienced team than his just by watching them in pregame warm-ups Wednesday.

Then they proved it even further during the game.

Jordan Burnsworth homered and drove in five runs, and Jordan Holley pitched a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as the Apaches beat RHS 12-0 in five innings at Bob Copeland Field.

Abbott homers, but RHS loses to Logan

A dinger's a dinger if the umpire says it's a dinger.

That's what Rochester center fielder Brett Abbott was credited with in the first inning against Logansport at Bob Copeland Field Tuesday. But if that was an optical illusion, what happened over the next five innings wasn't.

Bad Day: Manchester catcher's 3 RBIs lead to win over Lady Zs

The Rochester softball team came into their game with Manchester Monday having scored 53 runs during a four-game winning streak.

Manchester sophomore pitcher Mattie McKee put a stop to it, and she has her sophomore battery mate to thank for it.

The Rochester boys golf team won the Logansport Invitational title by shooting a 329 at Dykeman Park Golf Course Saturday.

Runner-up Logansport finished four strokes back. Caston was eighth in the 10-team field with a 424.

Betten homers, drives in 6 as Valley clubs Culver
AKRON - The Tippecanoe Valley softball team scored two runs combined in losses to Culver Academy and North Miami in their last two games.

They got their confidence back on Friday, bashing out 13 hits and drawing 11 walks as they rolled to a 22-8 win in five innings over visiting Culver Friday.
