Bessie Marie Bain, 90, Grand Rapids, Minn., died with family nearby, on May 14, 2019.

Bessie was born June 15, 1928, in Marshtown, the third of nine children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ida Mullins; sisters Zora Lee Conner, Esther Bixler and Mary Collins; brother Leroy Mullins; stepson Jack Poenix; stepgranddaughter Jenny Terry; infant granddaughter Rita Biddinger; granddaughter Marisa Bergman; and husbands Clyde Ford, Robert Poenix and John Bain.

Surviving are her sisters, Verna Hugel, Jean Caldwell and Luella Mullins; brother Ralph Mullins; children Norman Ford, Deer River, Minn., Virgil Biddinger, Rochester, Wayne Ford, Grand Rapids, Minn., Janet Maki, Cohasset, Minn., June Feltus, Duluth, Minn., Robert Poenix Jr., Deer River, Minn., and Lorrie Pratt, Arizona; stepdaughter Jean Thompson, Winamac; 25 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In August 1959, Bob and Bessie Poenix and their children purchased a resort in Suomi, Minn. Along with running the resort, they raised a buffalo herd. Bessie was proud she was a home health aide, helping many people get well.

Bessie returned to her home area in Indiana for awhile to care for her mother and was an active member of Pulaski County REACT. She returned to the Grand Rapids, Minn., area in 2002 to be close to family.

She was known for knitting and donating hats to schoolchildren, cancer patients and family.

Per her request, no service will occur. The family had a private memorial.
