Betty “Joan” Cowan, 83, resided in Rochester for the past 40-plus years. Joan was born in Hanna on June 29, 1935, to the late Donovan Sr. and Edith (Bruce) Smith.
Having had polio at age 20, Joan was left as a paraplegic, and reading was her passion. She “traveled through books” as she was known to say. She was well-known to the library staff as they prepared books to be delivered to her.
Joan was preceded in death by her son, Rocky Cowan; and brother Gerald Smith.
Remaining to cherish the memory of her are her daughter-in-law, Scarlet Cowan, Midlothian, Ill.; and three granddaughters, Amber Cowan, Holly Cowan, and Brooke (Adam) Palys, all of Illinois. Joan is also survived by her three sisters, Jackie Wheeler, Tigard, Ore., Norma Hicks, Michigan, and Becky Kelsey, Granger; brother Dave (Sandy) Smith, Longview, Wash.; and sister-in-law Cathy Toscano, Connecticut.
Friends are welcome to join the family in saying goodbye at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at the chapel inside St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger. Bubb Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fulton County Public Library, 320 W. Seventh St., Rochester, IN 46975.
