Sept. 22, 1944 – Aug. 13, 2019

Thomas David Shafer, 74, Gilead, passed away at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, at his residence.

He was born on Sept. 22, 1944, in Miami County, to Chester and Evelyn (Neterer) Shafer. He was the fourth child and the second son. A towhead as a child, he grew in to a man with a bushy beard and a long ponytail.

A 1962 graduate of North Miami High School, he married Patty L. Steininger on July 2, 1966. They became the proud parents of four sons during the duration of their marriage.

Tom loved his family, over-the-road trucking, motorcycles, guns, and reading, in no particular order. He was an avid collector of books. He was a longtime member of the Rochester American Legion and a proud and active member of ABATE.

Survivors include his sons, David and wife Marty Shafer, Peru, Mark and wife Tammy Shafer, Claypool, Lee Shafer, Fulton, and Brian and wife Julia Shafer, Logansport; grandchildren Katherine Shafer, Amber Scott, Drake Shafer, Brittany Shafer, Brent Shafer, Malachi Shafer, Aalayah Shafer, Brennan Fry, and Tayler Shafer; a granddaughter of his heart, Cassandra Schnitz; sisters Nancy Dotson, Akron; Elizabeth and husband Duane Flaherty, Macy; brother Joseph and wife Sadie Shafer, Gilead.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Christine Shafer and brother Dan Shafer.

A memorial visitation for family and friends will take place from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron.
